Aquaculture

Aquaculture started in Mallaig in the mid-eighties when Hydro Seafoods GSP started farming in Loch Nevis, about 6 miles from the port of Mallaig.

Aquaculture has grown from there. Mallaig is now a major hub for aquaculture companies such as Mowi, Scottish Sea Farms and Bakkafrost  dealing with their smolt transfer, feed storage, mooring and net washing service boats and incoming harvest fish / dead haul.

Scottish Seafarms operates sites in Loch Nevis, while MOWI operate sites off the Small Isles of Muck and Rum, all of which are serviced from Mallaig.

Aquaculture service companies Solvtrans, Inverlussa Marine Services, Trident Aqua Services, Ferguson Shipping are regular users of our first class facilities.

Mowi has operated a harvest station in the outer harbour since 2004. One to two Well boats discharge fish nightly, which are then transported onward to the processing plant in Fort William. This allows a short time from boat to factory.

Mallaig Harbour Authority operates a transit warehouse for Aquaculture feed produced by Biomar and Cargill (EWOS). Feed is brought in by road then loaded onto vessels to be transferred to the sites.

2025 saw the introduction of the FSV Scotia, a state of the art dead haul vessel, which harvests fish at the farm, to be discharged into tankers in Mallaig, to once again be taken to the processing plant in the same Mowi factory in Fort William.
