The Port and Marine Facilities Code (PMSC) provides a framework for harbour authorities to manage marine operations safely within an established national standard, reducing risks to harbour users, the public and the environment.

Mallaig Harbour Authority is fully committed to complying with the PMSC and the accompanying Guide to Good Practice.

We operate a comprehensive Marine Safety Management System which sets out the policies, procedures and risk controls required to ensure the safe management of marine operations within our harbour limits.

Mallaig Harbour Authority has a clear governance structure to ensure compliance with the Port and Marine Facilities Safety Code.

• Duty Holder – Responsible for the overall safety of harbour operations and ensuring the Harbour Authority complies with the Code. In Mallaig Harbour Authority’s case, the Board is the Duty Holder.

• Harbour Master / Deputy – Responsible for the day-to-day management and safe operation of the harbour.

• Designated Person – Provides independent assurance that the Marine Safety Management System is working effectively and that the Harbour Authority is complying with the Code.

As part of our commitment to the PMSC, we;

• Maintain and regularly review a number of marine risk assessments covering navigation, harbour operations, and marine activities within the harbour limits.

• Regularly engage with harbour users and stakeholders, both formally and informally.

• Publish an annual report outlining progress towards compliance with the code
